About The Artist

Desmond McCaffrey is an Alberta-based wildlife artist whose work is deeply rooted in a lifetime of outdoor experience. Born in Saskatchewan and raised in Edmonton and Grande Prairie, Desmond found his passion early—sketching wildlife scenes from memory after weekend hunts and fishing trips with his father. The forests along Bear Creek in northern Alberta became his sanctuary and classroom, shaping both his artistic eye and his love for the natural world.

A self-taught painter, Desmond transitioned from acrylics to oils to better express the spirit of the wilderness he knows so well. After working in Alberta’s oilpatch, guiding big game hunts, and running a taxidermy business, he committed fully to his art in 1989. His paintings have since earned national recognition, including commissions with the Royal Canadian Mint, and hang in collections across Canada.

Today, Desmond’s work celebrates the wildlife and landscapes of Alberta with boldness, reverence, and unmatched authenticity.
